About us

Situated in Kent in the south-east of England, Medway covers the towns of Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham and Rainham as well as more rural areas including the Hoo Peninsula.

The area has plenty of green spaces, excellent facilities for residents and businesses, and easy access to motorways and the rail network.

Medway Council is a unitary authority, providing all local government services to a quarter of a million people in the area.

We look after education, environment, social care, housing, planning, business and much more - everything from frontline services such as rubbish collection and events such as the Dickens Festival, to work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure services in Medway run smoothly and cost effectively.

Employment Checks

We have a duty to safeguard children and vulnerable adults in our community so we check potential employees who want to work with us to deliver services to these groups. This is to make sure that our recruitment and selection decisions are safe and we do this by working with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who do we check?

We check all potential and existing employees, permanent and temporary, if they work in roles included in the exceptions order to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (amended in 2013).

We also check the criminal backgrounds of people not employed by us (Medway Council) who work in particular roles such as foster carers, adoptive parents, volunteers, contractors and external agency staff.

Why do we check?

We have a responsibility for checking the safety, competence, integrity and skills of potential employees before they are given roles where they will typically have access to children and vulnerable people. We will take every step to make sure our employees are suitable to carry out the work.

We comply fully with the DBS Code of Practice on how we correctly handle, use, store, retain and dispose of disclosures and disclosure information. We also fully meet our obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 and other relevant legislation on the safe handling, use, storage, retention and disposal of disclosure information.

An offer of employment for a post which requires a disclosure check is subject to us getting a satisfactory response to the DBS checks.

We offer this online checking service to external organisations. Please contact us on 01634 334499 or email hradvice@medway.gov.uk for more information.
